“No,” he snaps. “I’m going to keep you safe.”

Despite my body still trembling, I throw back the covers. “So you’re just going to lock me up? For how long? Forever?” I snarl.

His eyes grow cold. Distant. “Don’t tempt me.”

I watch as he heads out the door, slamming it shut behind him. For a minute, I’m frozen in disbelief. He might not lock me up in this room, but keeping me in his apartment, with no guarantee I’ll be let out any time soon, is just as bad.

Throwing back the covers, I snatch my clothes from the floor, yanking them on. I stuff my feet into my shoes before racing towards the bedroom door. Throwing it open, I stalk into the hallway and out into the living room. Killian isn’t here—he must have just left. Niccolo isn’t here either. But five other men are posted around the room, with more probably out in the hall. Three are mine, and two are Killian’s.

I move towards the front door, but one stops me—one of his. “Miss, we can’t let you leave.” He at least looks somewhat apologetic about it.

“Move the fuck out of my way,” I snap. He doesn’t budge.

I shove against his chest, but it’s like trying to move a brick wall. Turning to my own men, I glare at them. “And you’re just going to ignore me as well?” I demand. “When I tell my father about this….” They pale slightly but don’t move. They exchange quick looks I can’t decipher.

“I fucking swear, if you don’t let me—”

My men move so fast that I barely realize what’s happened until it’s too late. The air electrifies as two tasers find their marks, burying their prongs deep inside the chest of the two Italians. The third Irish gapes as the bodies hit the floor, twitching. I freeze as the two Irish soldiers drop the tasers, heading straight for me. The third tries to stop them, jumping between us, but he’s knocked out within seconds.

“What the hell is going on?” I demand, backing away.

They say nothing, but something tells me they aren’t acting on my father’s orders or even Owen’s. There’s a dark look in their eyes—one I’ve seen countless times now. Just as one reaches for me, I duck. My arm lashes out, hitting him in the side. He stumbles forward, cursing.

“Now, Cara. Don’t make this any harder on yourself.” The second one stalks towards me, and I panic. He lunges forward. Using his momentum, I twist, my elbow connecting with his jaw. He flies past me, falling right into the black wooden coffee table. It shatters, wood splintering across the carpet.

The first is already back on his feet, reaching for me. I barely have time to react. There’s no way I can fight both of them off now. I need help. Killian wouldn’t have just left these five to guard me alone. There’d be more—most likely out in the hall. Scrambling towards the door, I’m just inches away. My fingers graze the door handle; a scream is locked in my throat, ready to let loose.

A hand clamps around my mouth just as another snakes around my throat. Air catches in my lungs. I can’t breathe. I struggle to free myself, my nails clawing at the arm, pinning me against a strong chest. But it’s useless. I can smell his cologne and feel the heat of his body against my back. Stars dot my vision as the air struggles to release itself from my throat.

“Sorry, Cara.” It’s the last thing I hear before something hard hits the back of my skull, pain lancing through my head.

Before everything goes black.
