Epilogue

Nero

I saw her in the firelight. Or rather, I saw them. They were walking across a plain, sere and without plant life. Or at least almost without. The sun blazed down on them, darkening my mate’s skin and making her hair lighter. She was too thin, as was her other mate, but they appeared strong, and they were moving along as if they had a destination in mind.

“You must intercept them,” the wise woman said, crouching beside me by the fire. “But it’s very far and there is much danger.”

“I think…I think I can meet them before too very long.”

“Oh, but it’s not before you meet them that the danger happens. They are going home, to her first mate’s pack, but their way will be blocked, and it’s together you will have to find safe harbor.”

“Together. They look so happy together.”

“But without you, they don’t stand a chance.”

“And with me?”

She rested a withered hand on my arm. “With you, a slight one.” Reaching into the pouch at her side, she pulled out a stone. It was three-sided and had some odd dents in it. “Take this. It is very ancient and will help you get safely to them.”
