“Some vultures don’t understand subtle hints and don’t deserve your gentlemanly manners.”

His phone dings with a notification, and he fishes it from his pocket.

“I bet I can guess who that is,” I say.

He holds the screen up, so I can read the text message.

It’s a photo of Susanna by a pool in a tiny bikini with the words,Missing you.

I burst into laughter.

“Want to really get them talking?” I ask.

“What do you have in mind?”

I don’t answer him. Instead, I crawl up to my knees on the padded bench, and I prowl toward him across the table.

He lifts an eyebrow, and I take his face in my hands and attack his mouth with mine.

It doesn’t take but a moment for him to get on board with the surprise kiss. He braces his forearms on the table and kisses me back passionately.

He’s good with his mouth and tongue.

I find myself forgetting about the audience and get carried away as he nips at my bottom lip. When I hear a throat clear behind me, I disengage from his mouth and look over my shoulder to find May standing there with her arms crossed over her chest.

“I was just thanking him for the excellent breakfast choice,” I say.

She grins. “Can I get you anything else?” she asks.

“I think I’m satisfied,” I reply.

She tears our check from her booklet and sets it on the table before walking off.

I bring my eyes back to Corbin. “I think that did the trick,” I whisper.

Then, I reach down, grab the paper, and hand it to him as Monica and her gossiping posse stomp past us to the door.

I sit back down on my ass and pick up my fork to finish the delectable food.

He was right. Best gravy I’ve ever had.

We get the first coat of primer on the fishing shack.

“It already looks a thousand times better,” I say.

“It does. You’d better be careful. This place might grow on you,” Corbin states as he elbows my side.

I shake my head. “Not really anold shack in the woodskind of gal.”

“I don’t see an old shack. I see an empty vessel of family love that once was,” he muses.

“That’s awfully profound, Tuttle.”

“You might not have had any experiences here, but your mom did. Your grandparents did. This place helped build your mom into the person she was. Maybe it could help you find yourself,” he says.

“Who says I’m lost?”

“Not lost, just searching for something.”
