“Oh, it’s fine.” Voices hum on his end of the call; people asking questions, others giving directions. “I’ll just see you when I see you. It’s no big deal.”

Exhaling a breath of relief, I look back to Seraphina and harden my stare when she huffs.

“You’d be missing out on a hell of a party,” he teases. “And my daughters are in town—both of them. They’ve brought their families, so tonight is more than just a stuffy event where everyone tries to impress each other with how snobby they can be.”

“Mayor—”

“You’d meet my granddaughter. But it’s fine.”It’s anything but fine. “No big deal that you’ll miss such a special event. It’s okay. I get it.”

“Mayor…”

“No, it’s totally okay. I understand you don’t wish to spend your evening celebrating the inauguration of a mayor you don’t wish to kill.”

“Oh, for goodness sake.”

Justin chuckles under his breath. “I’m kidding. It’s cool. Take care of you, Mayet. Is everything okay over there?”

“Yeah.” I drop my head into my hand and rub the wrinkle that forms between my brows. “Just busy.”

“Alright, well…” He pauses for a moment. “I hope things settle soon. I intend to drop by next week to discuss that nasty business with your former employee, Kernicke.”

Instantly, my spine straightens. “Is there an issue?”

“He filed a complaint about your administration. But don’t concern yourself,” Justin inserts before I get the chance to come to my own defense. “As all complaints should go, I asked for his proof… and all he managed to say was you were mean to him.”

He sniggers under his breath. “Sometimes, as boss, people just don’t like us.”

“Is he going to be an issue for the George Stanley, Mayor? Is that something I need to worry about?”

“Not at all. He was essentially told to take his opinion out of my office and rotate. I assured him a letter of recommendationanywhere elseif he’d simply leave me the hell alone. Is he going to be an issue for you on a personal level, Doctor?”

I shake my head instinctively, but then I glance up to Seraphina as I pause to actually consider.

Still, I come up with the same answer. “No. He’s not an issue for me.”

“Then let’s put it away. He has a nice little job waiting for him in Chicago. He’s excited about the change, and I’m excited to be rid of the dregs we’re working out of Copeland’s system. I have to run for now, Doctor. But thanks for calling to let me know you can’t make it.”

“Yup.” I drop my face into my hand and sigh. “You’re welcome.”
