Round Two

Bobby almost throws me from his lap when he jumps up and screams at the TV screen. “Tap! Motherfucker, tap!” Jimmy holds onto his opponent tight as a snake.

I can’t believe it, we’re almost one fight down.

Jimmy’s going to win.

Jon and Bobby jump like maniacs and mirror Aiden on the screen. Three brothers scream in sync, and I bet if the cameras panned out to Jack, he’d be doing the same thing.

Venicila thrashes like a rabid dog in an attempt to dislodge Jimmy. His head whips around wildly, and every time he comes close to Jim’s face, I cry out and cover my eyes.

The referee drops to his hands and knees and presses his face in as close to the guys as he can safely manage.

He’s waiting for the tap.

The whole stadium is waiting for the tap.

As though someone called Jim’s name, his head pops up meercat style and his eyes scan the crowd. My whole world slows down in dread. Venicila’s head whips up before Jim has a moment to react. I watch through my fingers as his head connects with Jim’s face and blood spurts free. The impact sends Jim flying off of his opponents back like a sand-filled rag doll until he lands flat on his back.

Unmoving.

Unconscious.

I want to spew.

I want to cry.

Bobby and Jon turn silent with shock. I jump up from my seat and rush to Bobby. He doesn’t look at me, he doesn’t take his eyes from the screen, but he places his arm over my shoulders and tucks me into his side.

And we wait.

The octagon floods with officials and medics, but thankfully, since we’re watching on screen rather than live inside the arena, the cameras do a really good job of getting a clear view of what’s going on.

Venicila prowls the cage as medics kneel around Jimmy. My heart sits in my throat… and we wait. Unapologetically, Izzy shoves her way through the crowd and into the cage. Big scary men try to stop her, but she slides through them like water over rocks, and she kneels beside Jim’s unconscious body.

“Come on, Jim. Wake up, wake up, wake up,” Jon murmurs.

Bobby rubs his hand along my arm.

The whole crowd holds their breath while we wait.

I don’t know what the medics do, but they wave something around his face and under his nose, and they lift his eyelids and shine a light in them.

What feels like an eternity later – but was probably only five minutes – Jim squirms and his eyelids flutter. Dazed for only a moment, his eyes pop wide with shock and he attempts to jump up. Strong medic hands try to hold him down. Then strong security hands try. Aiden pushes his brother’s shoulders down, but it’s not until Izzy leans over and speaks does he stop fighting.

Eyes locked on Izzy, he lays back and let’s everything go. The tension in his body, the worry in his eyes. He simply pulls Iz closer until her chest lays over his and his hand cups her head.

“Alright, peacock. Jim’s out, but he’s okay.” Jon turns away from the TV and walks to the hanging robe. “It’s your turn.”

I kind of want to punch him in the face for his insensitivity.

But he’s right.

Jim’s out. Izzy’s with him.
