Page 126 of Finding Victory

Bobby wants his belt back, and Thomlassen doesn’t want to give it up when it was won so easily.

Bobby barely dodges a wild elbow strike, and I wince at the near miss. If I thought I was hurting when I watched Jim fight, it’s nothing on how I feel now. It gives me an entirely new appreciation for Bobby’s reactions when I fought last year.

Tony strikes out again, left, right, left, left, front kick, but Bobby deflects all but one, then parries the kick to the side and ducks inside Tony’s guard. Bobby’s powerful fist strikes out and slams into Tony’s ribs. He finishes his attack with a violent uppercut and sends Tony’s head snapping back.

I gasp and close my eyes. Jesus, I’m even crying for the other guy.

Tony shakes off the shock and charges forward. Jab, jab, kick, kick. They trade blows for a minute solid, and when their movements spin Bobby back toward me, I cry out at the blood trickling from his brow.

Where’s my white towel? I want a towel, and I want to throw it in.

Now.

Unaffected, Bobby comes back with a really cool jab, jab, right, left hook, then a spinning kick where his heel whooshes past Tony’s head.

The crowd goes crazy at the near miss.

Even Tony makes a ‘holy shit’ face when he realizes how close it was.

Rushing forward, he slams Bobby against the cage right in front of me with so much force, the sweat literally flies off them and rains down over Iz and me.

I cry out for him.

I hate this.

I hate every second of it.

They’re so close, that if I stood on my tiptoes, I could probably touch Bobby’s back. Despite being squished between Thomlassen and the cage, Bobby’s fists continue to pound into Tony’s ribs. He lifts them. Rearranges them.

This is nothing like the fight I had last year. It’s an entirely different universe to what I experienced.

Hooking his right foot into the cage, Bobby walks his leg wider and wider, until all of a sudden, he flips their position and lands behind Tony and presses his face to the cage. Jon screams at Bobby to take it to the mat, but the buzzer sounds and the referee jumps between them.

My heart bruises my chest from the inside out and almost sends me dizzy. Spinning as soon as he’s free from the ref, Bobby’s eyes snap to mine.

He’s checking on me. Making sure I stayed put.

Jon shouts instructions to Bobby, but Bobby simply steps to the fence and stares. My face burns. I’m exhilarated. I’m pumped full of adrenaline.

I’m pretty turned on, too.

I mean, I’m watching my husband fight like a wild animal, and I doubt I’m the only woman in this arena lusting after him.

At leastIget to take him home.

I worry that he’s not paying enough attention to Jon. I worry he’s getting distracted and will pay the price as soon as Thomlassen is released again, so in an attempt to satisfy him, I place my finger on my eye.

I.

Then I place my hand over my heart.

Love.

Then I point at him.

His eyes melt. He smiles wickedly, and grabbing the cage, he beckons me forward with a crooked finger.

No way!
