Bobby

An Unexpected Gift

Jimmy and I hang in my room in a cloud of awkward silence while we wait to be called downstairs. I’ve only got to wait another thirty minutes.

That’s all I promised.

Once two o’clock rolls around, it’s time to go looking for her.

Jon and Aiden were called out to help my mom with whatever last-minute jobs she needed done, but with a dangerously poked finger and direct orders, I was told to stay in my room like I was five all over again.

Jim lays back on my bed and tosses a tennis ball against the wall.Thunk. Thunk. Thunk.I swear, I might kill him if he doesn’t stop.

Thunk. Thunk. Thunk. Then aknock knockat the door.

I stop lapping the room and stare at the door. As far as I know, everyone is supposed to be finding their places downstairs, and if it were my brothers, they’d just walk in.

I turn to Jim. “You get it. If it’s Kit, send her in and you get the fuck out. Other than that, I don’t wanna know.”

With a smirk, he climbs off the bed with a grunt and steps to the door. I take his spot on the bed and lie down with a hand over my eyes.

I just want to see Kit.

This has been the longest twenty-four hours of my damn life. I’m sick of the fanfare, I’m sick of ‘tradition.’ I just want Kit.

“Well hey there, cutie pie.” Unsurprisingly, Jim rolls out the charm for whatever pretty girl is on the other side of the door. I roll my eyes, though inside, I’m stoked that he’s willing to flirt – even if I know it’s fake. He’s putting on a brave face for me today. He’s refusing to drag his heartbreak into my wedding.

“I not pie, I Evie.” A little girl’s grumpy response has me jumping off the bed and running to the door. We don’t know anyone with a kid, but I only have a second to wonder before I swing the door wide to find two stunning blondes – neither of which I’ve ever met before in my life.

The little blonde glares at Jimmy with adorable pinched brows, and the mama blonde smirks like she knows a secret. “I’m gonna go ahead and assume you’re Bobby Kincaid?” She shuffles a bag to the arm holding her daughter, then presents her hand and takes mine in a firm grip. “My name’s Christina Cooper.”

“Hi, Christina Cooper. I’m Bobby. Can I help you?”

“Actually, I might be able to help you. I have a delivery for you, from your bride.”

My scowl from a moment ago is replaced with a face-aching grin. “You know Kit?”

“Kitty is bewwwwtifull!” the little girl sing-songs happily.

I fight the ridiculous urge to hug the shit out of that kid.

I’ll probably be arrested, so I don’t.

But I want to. She’s adorable.

“You know Kit, too?” I lean closer and smile at the curly haired beauty. “She’s beautiful all the time, huh?”

“Yes, she’s so pretty. And her dress, too. Like mine.” She flutters her skirts and shows off a white diaper before her mom pats it down.

“Your dress sure is pretty.” I look over at a smiling Jimmy. A part of me is embarrassed that I’m insanely jealous of her. She’s already seen Kit today.

I want to see her.

The other part of me doesn’t give a shit about being embarrassed, and jumps on the‘I want to see Kit’wagon, too.

“Ah, anyway,” the grown-up blonde clears her throat, “like I said, my name is Christina, and I’m a friend of Kit’s. She and I, and Tink and Izzy, have been scheming this week. Kit wanted to send you a last-minute wedding gift.”
