Surprise

That entire dance was painful to watch.

For a moment while Jim stood over her shoulder at the table, with his hand out in offer and eyes that begged for ayes,I hoped that maybe it could be the start of a new – happy – reality for them. Just force them together, make them talk, make them happy.

My heart sprinted with elation as they swayed. As they talked.

But like a car crash, it all went to shit. Izzy’s heart broke, visible for everyone to see. Jimmy’s pleading eyes turned devastated. She left him standing in the middle of the dancefloor, and she ran away crying.

Bobby’s hand squeezes mine and his Adams apple bobs with emotion. Jon and Tink sway beside us, though of course, all four of us have been barely moving. We’ve been watching the show and hoping the flaming car crash could miraculously turn into something good.

Even Jon’s‘no one’s good enough to date my sister’stance pales in comparison to his‘I just want her to be happy.’

“I’ll go…” I attempt to step free of Bobby’s grip, but he holds me tight.

“No, you stay here.” Tink steps back from Jon and glances around us. “I’ll find her in a few minutes. Give her time to pull herself together. I’ll make us some tea and we can hide inside for a while. Plus,” she forces a fun smile, “don’t you have something to do…?”

At her reminder, I think of the surprise I have for Bobby. It’s not a big deal, not even close to as exciting as a porn centerfold like earlier, but still, I think Bobby will love it.

I do my best to put Izzy out of my mind. I can’t bear to look into Jim’s eyes as I lead Bobby off the dancefloor. Their heartbreak is my heartbreak, but this is also my wedding day, and I have a role to play. “Come with me.”

“What have you done?” Bobby practically bounces behind me like a child on Christmas morning. I’ve realized something about Bobby today; he loves good surprises. I was unconscious and in hospital last Christmas, but I promise myself I’ll make this year big and beautiful for him.

“Well, follow me and you’ll find out. Jon, you can come, too. And the others.” I tap Jack and Aiden on the shoulder as we pass.

“Why do they get to come too?” Bobby pouts and bounces along behind me. “Whatever it is, I’m not sharing.”

“Stop being a brat or you get nothing.”

“Don’t be so mean.” He slaps my ass and pulls me in close as we walk. “Or do. This bossy thing is hot.”

“Shut up, you twit. Alright, so… Bobby, focus.” I snap my fingers in front of his face as his hands greedily explore my ass. “When we were discussing the plans for tonight, you mentioned wanting something. You sulked for a week… So,” I gesture around the bend of the footpath, “just for you, babe.”

Threading our fingers together and refusing to let me free, he drags me around the house and stops with a laugh when he can see the street. “You got me a pizza truck?” He laughs and smiles like a child. “A whole pizza truck.”

“A whole pizza truck. They’ll be here until ten, and they’re on tap to make anything you want. Go crazy.”

Jack pushes past us at a trot and sprints to the truck, but Bobby turns to me with a stupid grin and strokes my jaw. “I love my wife.”

“I love my husband, so, you know, whatever.”

He snorts. “You’re the best, baby. Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. Enjoy it, but save space for the ice-cream truck.”

“You’re kidding?”

“I’m absolutely not kidding. You got pizza. I wanted ice cream and milk shakes. Fair’s fair.”

“Yeah. Fair’s fair, babe.” He slaps my ass one last time. “Let’s go get some pizza. I’ll help you not spill on your pretty dress.”
