Oh, well, in that case.“You are the princess.” I return her kiss, but I don’t release her ass.

Evie slaps her hands over her own mouth and giggles when Jim makes gagging noises. With furrowed brows, Izzy pulls the toddler’s hands away. “What did you say, baby?”

She watches us with dancing eyes. “He said…shit.”

“No!” Everyone in the room collectively shouts at once.

Evie giggles. “Naughty words.”

“Yes, naughty words, Evie. We don’t say that.”

“Shit.”

Jimmy groans. “Tina’s gonna kill me.”

Watching us curiously, Aiden steps into the kitchen and drops his gym bag on the floor. “Whose kid is this? And why’s she swearing?”

Evie lifts her chin proudly. “I Evie.”

“And who do you belong to, Evie? Or are you imaginary?”

She tilts her head to the side. “Imagerary?”

“Smaller words, Aiden. Smaller… likeshit.”

Kit snorts against my chest. “We’re looking after Evie while her mama takes a few hours out.” She tightens her hold and looks up into my eyes. “I hope you don’t mind she’s here. I know you’re tired.”

“No, I don’t mind, baby. You did mention it, but I forgot.”

“That’s okay, you have a good excuse.”

“How’d today go?” Jack asks. For the first time since we got home, he turns around and presents a bruised and swollen face. His eye is purple, and his bottom lip is painfully split.

“What the hell happened to you?” I pull away from Kit and storm across the room. Evie lets out a new squeak and dives back into Iz’s lap.

“Woah!” Jack jumps back and slams into the fridge. “What’s your problem?”

“My problem?” I roughly grab his chin and angle his head so I can study the injuries. “Who hit you? We talked about fighting, Jack. It’s not on. I’ll kick your ass outta the gym faster than you can get your gloves off if you hurt your sister again.”

“What are you talking about?” He jerks his face from my grasp. “You knew I was fighting today!”

“What?”

“My development-day fight. That was today.”

“It was?”

“Yeah. I literally told you about it at breakfast, dumbass.”

“Shit, Jack. I’m so sorry. I fucked up.”

Aiden and Jim look as guilty as I feel. We’re supposed to be brothers, we’re supposed to support each other, but Jim and I are taking up everyone’s time and energy, and we’ve left Jack out in the cold.

We’ve never, not once, missed a brother’s fight until now. And his face is all busted up. What a welcome to the family.

Fuck!

“It’s okay.” He shrugs easily. “I had Izzy and Kit in my corner. We smashed it.”
