Kit snorts and eats her beef.

“You still get to be an uncle, Bobby. I’m not going far.”

“But we wanted to help you. You’re going to be tired, Sissy. And sore. Being a single mom, living alone, it’s going to be hard. We wanted to help.”

“I know, and you still can. We’ll make it work, I promise. But I need to do this. I need to find somewhere to settle in. Living here isn’t that place.”

“Alright. Alright.” He scrubs his hands over his face in resignation. “My house is still vacant, you can move in there.” His sentence isn’t a suggestion. Not a gentle nudge. He’s the oldest brother, the head of the family, and his word is final. He’s dictating and brooks no argument, and despite the fact he got it right this time, my rebellious little sister attitude fights to break free.

Must not argue for the sake of arguing.

“Actually.” I swallow down the bitterness, also known as ‘don’t tell me what to do’. “That’s exactly what I’d planned to do. I was going to ask if it was alright.”

“It’s definitely alright. I’ll set it up, we’ll help you move whenever you say you’re ready.”

“Thank you.”

His eyes spark. He’s sort of pissed that I’m moving. “Is that everything? No more bombs? Can I go back to my dinner, now?”

I smirk and pick up my fork. “Yeah, that’s it. Eat.”

I pick at my food, I spend more time licking gravy off the fork than I do eating actual protein. Right now, right this very second, Jimmy’s across town on a date. Is he having a nice time? Is he laughing and holding her hand? My stomach cramps at the thought and sends the gravy curdling. I push my dinner away and turn to stand and excuse myself from the table.

“Hey, Iz…”

My eyes snap back to Bobby. To his low timbre and sad eyes.

I want to groan. I want to escape this table and go to bed. I’m done for today. “Mmm?”

“What you heard at the gym…” Yep, there’s that pity. I want to vomit. “About Jimmy. It’s nothing. He just met a chick online. They’re going on a date, but it’s nothing.”

“Oh.” I’m working for casualness. I even go so far as to wave my hand in the air like an idiot. “That’s fine. Jimmy can do anything he wants. He can date. I don’t mind.”Lie.

“It’s nothing, Iz.”

“It’s fine.”Lie.
