“You make it sound so easy.”

“It can be. I mean, I have a child. A little boy.” She grins. “He’s four.”

My head snaps up like I took an uppercut. Her dating profile definitely forgot to mention a kid. “You do?”

“Uh-huh. But I’m not going to write that shit on an internet dating website. I mean, if I meet the right guy down the track, I’d introduce them… If he were therightguy, I’d hope that DNA wouldn’t stop him from loving my son.”

She’s right. I know she is, but still… It’s not that simple.

“So…” she begins on a soft laugh. “Since you’re notmyright guy, and since we won’t be getting naked tonight - girl code and all that - why don’t you buy me dessert? Consolation prize and an extra half hour to wear my killer dress and talk to a guy who doesn’t stare at my boobs. Then you can go home to your other girl.”

“What do you mean girl code?”

She shrugs. “You know, girl code. It’s against the rules for me and you to hook up. You might technically be single, but you clearly belong to her. I can’t step on those toes. I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night.”

“But you don’t even know her… the other girl.”

“That’s true, but you’re really cool. Truly a gentleman, even though you’d rather be here with someone else. She must be pretty awesome if she’s got someone like you all twisted up.”

“Twisted up.” I snort quietly at her choice of words; yeah, she has me twisted up.

“Alright, I’m ordering the cherry chocolate sponge cake.” She flicks her wrist at the menu in easy dismissal. She had that dessert planned and picked out since before we came out.

It’s too damn bad I’m twisted up about Izzy.

I walk out of Jo’s apartment building by nine thirty and head back to my car. I’m still a virgin. I’m still hopelessly in love with the wrong person. And now I’m going home.

Alone.

My phone dings loudly in the evening quiet, so I lope around my Jeep and throw myself into the driver’s seat to see a group chat on my phone.

Awesome.

Bobby:Family meeting!

Aiden:What’s up?

Bobby:Jon, Jim? You there?

I brush my hands over my face in exhaustion. This already sucks. I know it does.

Me:Yup,I’m here

Jon:What’s up?

Bobby:Izzy’s moving out…

Jon: Wtf!?

Aiden:When? Why?

I watch the texts fly down my screen.Who. What. When. Where. Why.But I keep my silence.

Though I wish she’d stay at Bobby’s, because that’s where she’s the safest, it doesn’t matter to me so much where she goes.

I’ll follow her anywhere. I’ll protect her anywhere. It’d just be easier if she moved into mine.
