“Aww, and now you found her again?”

“Yeah, I guess. So I’m heading out in a sec. Gotta go have a shower and shit. Get ready.”

“Gotta shave your legs?” Jim coughs out a painful laugh when Aiden shoots a glare across the room. “It would be embarrassing to forget.”

“Shut up, di–” He bites off his words and looks at Livi and Ben.“Ding dong.”

Kit laughs. “Smooth save. You’ve been learning with Evie. Which reminds me,” she pats Bobby’s chest, “we have to go soon, too. She’s coming over tonight.”

“She is?” Aiden’s smile widens with a childlike glee. “Damn. Maybe I’ll drop by before I go home.”

“We’ll be home tomorrow or the next day,” Jim adds. His strong fingers twine between mine and help soothe my heart. “Doc says a day or two.”

He’s right. One or two more days of life being all wrong, then unlike the time I was staying in this hospital, I’m not scared of being a family. I want him to come home, and I don’t ever want him to leave again.

I’ve slept with the shiny wrench under my pillow for a week, but he’ll be home soon, then we can protect each other again, just like we promised when I was a six-year-old with a crush on her best friend.
