Beep.“James Kincaid, please, please tell me you didn’t go to Belle’s house last night. I’m begging you, don’t be that guy.”

I turn to Iz, but she simply shrugs. “It’s okay. I know where you were last night.” She presses a kiss to the ball of my shoulder and sends my heart galloping.

Beep.“Jimmy, I’m begging you. Please take my call. I love you, but I love Izzy more. I swear she deserves better than this.”

“Aww,” Izzy gushes.

It’s okay, I love Izzy more, too.

Beep.“James Kincaid, I will call your mother!”

Beep.“Okay, I won’t call your mom. But I’m so mad at you!”

Beep.“Babe! Leave him alone.”Bobby’s deep voice rumbles in the next voicemail. Then,“James!”

Beep.“Jim, I’m worried about Iz.”Her tone changes dramatically. Iz is perfectly safe right beside me, but Kit doesn’t know that.“She isn’t at home. I’m on my way to the gym, she might be there.”

“Time to call her before she has a stroke,” Iz says.

I nod. It’s definitely time. Kit loves so deeply, which is wonderful, but she hurts herself with how much she worries. I hit redial and lean around to stroke Bean’s head.

“Dammit, Jim! Where the hell are you?” The noise of traffic and wind plays through the speakers. She really is driving to the gym.

“Hey Kitten, sheath your claws.”

“I can’t, Jim. I can’t find Izzy.”

“She’s okay. She’s literally sitting right next to me.”

“Hi, Kit.” Iz finger waves with her spare hand. I laugh at her silliness. She’s tired, and hungry, and low in blood. I’ll overlook it. And I won’t tease nearly as much as I normally would.

“Isabelle. Jesus, you scared me!” I lower the volume on my phone before we get in trouble. “Where are you?”

“Ah, actually–”

“Why are you both together?”

“Well–”

“I’m so glad you’re…there… and not anywhere else, Jim!”

“Can you shut up a sec? We’re trying to talk.”

For the first time in her life, Kit turns meek. “Okay.”

I snort. “Where’s Bobby?”

“He’s right here. He’s driving. Say hi, babe.”

“Hi, babe.”

Iz looks up at me playfully when the sound of Kit hitting Bobby reverberates through the phone.

“Where’s Jon?” He deserves to find out first, not after anyone else.

“He’s on his way to break into Iz’s house,” Kit says.

I roll my eyes. Lord, that girl can panic. “Hang on a sec, I’m going to call the other guys, too.”
