She smirked. “Not until we get to the laundry room.”

CHAPTERTWENTY-SIX

JOJO

“How amI going to convince Orem Foster to sell?”

I scooped a bite of chocolate ice cream into my mouth.

“Can you eat something that came from a cow?” Kane pointed his spoon at me.

“It’s made with almond milk.” I shoved a spoonful into his mouth. “Vegan.”

He swallowed. “No wonder it tastes like shit.”

“Is that why your bowl is almost empty?”

He scowled. “Do what you always do to get your way.”

I cringed. I’d grown up letting everyone else have their way most of the time. It still felt selfish to think in those terms. If I got what I wanted, didn’t that mean someone else didn’t?

“I can’t believe you’re hesitating. You went to jail for those homeless people and now you’re going to let one measly no stop you?” Kane polished off his ice cream and dug into mine.

“No. And don’t goad me.”

“I’m not goading you. It doesn’t seem like you to just back down.” He shrugged.

“You don’t know me.”

“I know you spent months on a boat to save some whales when you are more afraid of water than anything else. I know you’ve never put down roots anywhere so you can help other people. I know that you came to me, a man you hated, to help your daughter. I think I have a pretty good idea of what you’re like.”

Maybe he had a better picture than I thought.

“I put forth a really good option. He stood to gain more than he will by going forward with his project at the park. He wouldn’t listen.” I swung my feet against the washing machine in frustration.

Kane angled his body toward me. He’d kicked off his shoes and rolled up his sleeves. Casual. Comfortable. And in the warmth of the house, I was too.

“I pointed out some flaws in your whale expedition idea before you went, and that didn’t stop you. Think about it from his perspective. Make him see why selling that property to you is in his best interest.”

“I tried.” I threw my hands up.

The bowl slid off my lap, but Kane caught it before it hit the floor.

“Why does the man want to keep the property?”

“He got a good deal, so he’ll have a high profit margin on his project.”

He twirled his finger for me to keep going.

“Maybe the area is up and coming. Maybe he owns other property nearby. Maybe he’s got an in to get permits expedited. He already has plans.”

“So you need to give him something that’s worth a little more time on his part. Show him there’s low risk and high reward to move to the other site you found.” He lifted a shoulder and lowered it. “Let me have my guy do some investigative work. Find the guy’s weak spot.” He ate the last bite of my ice cream. “You’ll get your park.”

I set my bowl down. “I will. I’m just impatient.”

“Good thing I’m here to occupy your time.”

His smirk was no longer annoying. It was sexy.
