I swung my feet harder. I’d kissed him. I’d kissed Kane.

A million reasons why it was wrong, including my sister, swirled in my brain, but they were nothing compared to the frenzy he always caused in my cells.

I didn’t want to take the kiss back.

I wanted to indulge him. I wanted to indulge me.

No one had ever kissed me like that.

Maybe it was the sea air or being back where it all started, but he’d loosened the rusty lock on my feelings. I’d given in to impulse, and he’d rewarded me greatly.

“You’re thinking about that kiss.”

I snapped my gaze to his. “So are you.”

“Don’t let all that noise ruin it.” He waved his hand around.

“I’m not sorry.”

“Me neither.”

He touched my knee. It soothed and sparked at the same time. I’d meant what I’d said. I didn’t want to leave here.

There was a time not so long ago, it was hard to be in this place. Now, it felt like home, and we’d only been here for hours.

I stared at my bare feet as they swung.

“Barn. Look at me.”

The nickname was spoken with a reverence. And I found myself doing as he commanded.

“Do you like hanging around with me?”

The question wasn’t simple, yet it was.

“Sometimes,” I answered honestly.

He narrowed his eyes. “I can work with that.” He squeezed my knee. “Then if we want to hang out, we’ll hang out. If we don’t, we won’t. We do things our way.”

Was it really that easy?

I considered for a moment. That was how we’d ended up here. We’d chosen to spend a weekend together. There was no commitment. No obligation.

We’dwantedto.

And if it turned out we truly didn’t like each other, at least we’d know and could put to rest the giant what-if that had been hanging over us for so many years.

Slowly, I nodded. “Our way.”

“Which you know involves more questions.”

I straightened. “I can handle it.”

“And tomorrow night, they’re asked over whiskey.”

An uneasy feeling slithered through me. “I prefer tea.”

He hadn’t had anything to drink since we’d arrived. Maybe I’d just seen what I wanted to because I thought the worst of him when it came to his drinking.
