“No.” She spoke quickly. Too quickly and too sharply.

I shrugged. “Then it’s you and me, Barn.”

“Stop calling me that,” she said insistently.

“Hmm, I don’t think so.”

Her cheeks turned an angry shade of red. Still affected her. And I still liked it.

I strolled down the sidewalk, and to my surprise, she kept up with me. “The restaurant doesn’t have any of that weird fake meat shit. They might have a salad, but I wouldn’t know.”

“They did a study that found plants scream when we cut them,” she said quietly.

I stopped. “No kidding?”

She nodded. “They could hear them.”

I cocked my head. “What are we supposed to eat? No meat. No fish. No vegetables.” I winked. “I’m more than happy to do my part to save the plants. There won’t be any vegetables screaming because of me.”

She snorted and the barest hint of a smile curved her lips. I liked it. Liked that she couldn’t stand me, but I could still make her laugh.

“The plants will be thrilled to know they have an ally in you.”

I pulled on the side of her loose dress. “What’s under here now? Because if you don’t eat—”

“I eat.” She snatched the fabric out of my fingers.

“Oh yeah? What? Not steak. Not chicken. Not plants. Eggs? Is that acceptable?”

She shuddered. “No.”

“I’m running out of options here, Barn.”

“I’m vegetarian.”

I put a hand over my heart. “But what about the screams? Even a bastard like me can’t tolerate that.”

She punched me in the arm. “You hate vegetables so don’t act like you’re suffering for planet Earth.”

“I’m suffering all right. I missed lunch and I could go for a steak the size of my head. Rare.”

“There aren’t any cows the size of your head.”

I smirked. “Are you saying I have a big head?”

She thumped it. “Smart too.”

“Smart ass,” I muttered.

“I heard that.”

“Good.”

I felt like I was bantering with Whitley. He hadn’t joined my firm, but the way he kept making himself at home in my office, the next step would be to give him a ring.

I scowled. For my divorce battle, I needed him, and thank goodness he was helping me. He was the second-best lawyer in the city. I couldn’t represent myself.

“Here we are.” The restaurant didn’t look like much on the outside, but the food was outstanding.
