“But what if you can’t—”

“I can. And we both know it. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have come to me.”

The whiskey was delivered not a second too soon. I downed half of the glass.

“Bring the bottle,” I said gruffly.

“It’s barely four o’clock,” she chastised.

“And your point?” I polished off the amber liquid.

“Do your clients know you represent them in an inebriated state?”

“I’m notinebriated.” I crunched on a piece of ice. “And they don’t give a damn what I do as long as I win.” Nobody did as long as I delivered what they wanted.

She cringed and touched her ear.

“When can we discuss the issue?”

I sighed and refilled my glass to the brim. I didn’t generally day drink. Maybe it was simply because she was another Cunningham woman.

I gripped my drink.

Maybe I’d let the haze of past illusions guide me. And now I was stuck making good on a promise I didn’t want to keep. Most would call me unethical, but the truth was, my word was good. I was loyal to a fault. And I kept my promises . . . even when it was idiotic.

But I also liked to make people squirm. And if JoJo was going to use me, it was only fair I got to use her for my own amusement.

“We’ll get to that.” I settled back in the booth. “But first you’re going to tell me a few things.”

She fiddled with the end of the scarf. “Like what?”

“Let’s start with why you never got married.”

CHAPTERFOUR

JOJO

My entire body tensed.

All that frenzy of activity underneath my surface stopped as if Kane Zegas was directing my energy.

Why did he care why I hadn’t married?

“That’s intensely personal. And not relevant,” I quickly added.

“You want me to represent your daughter. It doesn’t get much more personal than that.”

“My life is none of your concern.”

He pressed his lips together. “I’m not asking out of curiosity.”

Somehow, that stung a bit. Though I wasn’t here to clamor for his attention. The less he knew about me, the better.

“I’m too busy for marriage.”

He lifted a brow. “But not too busy to raise a child?”

I smoothed the napkin in my lap. “Marriage isn’t a requirement for rearing children.”
