Patrick Whitley leaned in the doorway.

“This is getting serious. You’re letting yourself in my place. Next thing you know we’ll be going steady.”

He made a disgusted face. “I’m already married and I don’t need another wife.”

“Can’t argue with that.”

He dropped his briefcase on the dryer. “You just have to have more money than God, don’t you?”

“I’ve been accused of worse.”

“Do I need to bring a chair in here or can we go to your office like normal people?”

I motioned between the two of us. “Neither of us are normal.”

He hopped up on the dryer. “You’ll never believe who came to see me today.”

“Elliott. He’s temporarily gone insane and thinks you’re a better lawyer than I am.” He hadn’t been my client the longest, but he had been for a long time. And he wasn’t going anywhere. We knew too much about each other.

Whitley snorted. “No. Try again.”

“Hollingsworth.”

“Which one?”

I lifted my eyes to the ceiling, which was painted like the sky. It was gaudy and awful, but an argument with Alma I hadn’t wanted to have. I needed to hire someone to paint it.

“All of them.” Except technically, Lincoln, Teague, and Beau wereourclients anyway. Even if they paid a visit to Whitley, that didn’t mean I was out.

He crossed his arms in an X and made a buzzer sound. “Just give up. You’ll never get it right.”

“Do you do this to Marlow?”

He grinned. Of course he irritated his wife. It was only fair. She definitely did it to him.

“Getting warmer . . .”

He was having too much fun at my expense.

“I give up. Who?”

“Yourwife.”

I jerked my head toward him. “I don’t have a wife.”

“Fine. Your legally separated wife.”

“Alma?”

He slapped me on the back of the head. “Unless you have another wife you’re separated from, yes. Alma.”

“What did she want?”

He grinned. “Me.”

What was wrong with that woman? It was bad enough the way she behaved with... well, I didn’t really have any friends. But my professional colleagues? She’d crossed a line.

Who the hell was I kidding? She didn’t have any lines. And she must have fired yet another attorney. She was going through lawyers faster than boyfriends, which was also dragging things out.
