“She’s quite charming when she wants to be. I actually see how you fell for her.” He cocked his head. “What she ever saw in you, I don’t know.”

“Potential.” She was like a shark. She’d known I was going to make it big even when I hadn’t.

A calculated risk that had paid off in spades for her.

“She wants me to represent her in the divorce.”

I dropped my chin to my chest. Of course. The woman truly had no scruples. Why had I put up with her for so long?

He touched my shoulder. “I told her no.”

For a second, I’d wondered if he had. I was a people person until I wasn’t. We’d worked together a lot in the past few years, but we didn’t have a formal partnership.

“Good thing because I’d have you tossed off the case for conflict of interest.”

“I know you would.” He was sharp and learned quickly.

We’d worked together enough that he was picking up on my ways.

“Especially since I’m representing you.” He opened his briefcase and pulled out a legal pad. “And as your esteemed council, I think we need to go after the infidelity angle.”

I wasn’t in the mood to think about this. I wanted it over.Could’ve fooled me the way you’ve been dragging your feet. With so many assets, the divorce was complex. To be smart, I needed to take my time. But my procrastination had nothing to do with being smart. It was straight up avoidance. Apparently, Whitley was tired of letting me shrug off putting a case together.

When I didn’t say anything, he dropped his pen. “Or we could give her half and be done with it.”

Tempting. It was so tempting. But it was the principle. If she got half, I wouldn’t even notice it was gone.

It was my money.

She had what was in the trust her father left her. That was more than enough to maintain her extravagant lifestyle.

And I wasn’t paying her damn boyfriend’s way. I’d done that long enough.

He shoved the legal pad back in his case.

“Infidelity won’t work. I condoned it. And she left me.”

“Why did you let her run around on you?” There wasn’t judgment—well, not much—in his tone.

“Like I could have stopped her.”

If I allowed her to do what she wanted, it freed me up to do as I pleased. Which was work.

“Did you cheat on her?”

I glared at him. “No.”

He held up both hands. “I had to ask. And there will be more personal questions so buckle up.”

I never looked at another woman the entire time we were together. Ever.

Except JoJo.

I rubbed my temples. But I hadn’t acted.

No. You just let the laundry room become your sanctuary.

No one else needed to know why. I had my quirks. Those who knew me expected them.
