My curiosities about Kane would have to stay buried. They were irrelevant anyway.

“There was a protest in Portland—”

He held up both hands in a stop motion. “I don’t want to start there. Are there pending charges against Penelope?”

Once again I was jolted, this time at the sound of my daughter’s name coming out of his mouth. I’d wondered if he even knew it.

“Not yet.”

“So your retention of my services is precautionary?” He leaned back as if he had no worries. As if my daughter’s future wasn’t at risk.

I squeezed my eyes shut. “Something like that.”

“Has an attorney made contact on behalf of the other party?”

“No.”

He glanced toward the bar as if he wanted a drink. It was barely after nine. Did he have a drinking problem? Would that be one of my questions if I could ask?

“Cut through all the shit and break it down into a sentence what we’re facing.”

We’re.

Somehow I relaxed at the idea of him on our team.

“How about one word?”

He sighed. “Even better.”

“Murder.”

CHAPTERFIFTEEN

KANE

She certainly knowshow to shock the hell out of me.

How many people had sat in that very chair and needed my help with that very problem?

I didn’t remember.

But murder wasn’t what I’d expected to come out of her mouth.

Trespassing. Maybe a little destruction of property. Some sort of misdemeanor in relation to their causes.

Murder?

Hadn’t crossed my mind.

And it took a lot to shock me.

“Then you’ve come to the right man.”

She glared. “I know that. And she didn’t do it.”

“Don’t care if she did or didn’t.” When had I become so callous toward human life? I wanted to blame it on Alma, but I’d defended murderers before I met her.

JoJo wrinkled her nose in disgust. “I’d prefer you believe in her innocence.”
