I shrugged. “What?”

“You’re being rude.”

“Do you expect anything different?”

She sniffed bitterly. “No, I don’t.” And then her attention turned toNeil, and I didn’t like that either. “I’ll be in to the office soon. We need to discuss the new project. I’m not happy with the pace we’ve set.”

“I’m still trying to get contact information,” he said. “Why don’t I walk you to the office? We can discuss strategy.”

“We’re not finished,” I said.

JoJo glared at me. “Actually, we are.”

“Then I guess there’s no need for me to come over tonight.”

She smiled atNeil. A real smile. One of the rare ones that were never for me.

I hopedNeilgot run over by a bus.

“Can you excuse us a minute?”

I never got that tone either. It was warm and friendly and kind.

I hopedNeilgot backed over by that bus. Twice.

“Sure. I’ll wait over there.” He pointed to a mailbox that was just far enough away that he could still hear our conversation but made it seem like he couldn’t.

“You are coming over,” she hissed. All that pleasantness forNeildisappeared.

I flicked my gaze to him. “Looks like you’ll be busy discussing strategy.”

“We have an agreement. A signed one.”

“But it doesn’t set a concrete schedule. Guess you and Penelope will have to wait until I find a time when I’m not discussing strategy with someone else.”

She balled her fists. “She is yourfamily.”

“Technically, you are too. And apparently flirting with Neil is more important than helping your daughter.”

The open-handed blow landed on my cheek before I saw it coming.

I stared at JoJo in disbelief. She was the only one who ever dared to slap me.

“Nothing is more important than my daughter.” She shoved her finger into my chest. “And you will show up tonight or I will be your worst nightmare.”

“You’re going to have a hard time beating your sister for that title,” I said coolly. “But I dare you to try.”

JOJO

“Jo?”

I cringed as Neil used the nickname I hated. But he was such a nice man I didn’t have the heart to tell him.

“The Fitzsimmons Group bought that park. They closed a few days before the protest. I’m going to their offices this afternoon to discuss options,” I said.

I didn’t want to talk about Kane. I didn’t want to talk about my reckless loss of temper. And I didn’t want to talk about Kane.
