I could imagine the pout on her lips. The way she twirled the end of her scarf when she got frustrated.

“I don’t understand it. And I’m not going to give you a free pass when you don’t have feasible plans. But I would never stand in your way. You should know that.”

The silence stretched so long between us, I’d have thought she hung up other than the time on the phone still ticked upward.

“You’re very confusing.”

I rested my forearms on my knees. “Barn, I’m as uncomplicated as they come.”

Muffled talking came from the other end of the line.

“I have to go. Thank you for the phone. I think.”

I snickered. “You’ll probably want to throw it at me eventually.”

“At least that much I know how to do. I’ll never figure out what the rest of these buttons mean.”

“You don’t need any of them but the phone.”

“Why are you taking up for me?” There was genuine curiosity in her words.

“You’re the only person I know who is unapologetically themselves. I respect that.”

That silence returned.

“I really have to go.”

“I won’t let you chooseNeilover me very often.”

“You sound like a Neanderthal.”

“I’ve been called worse.”

I didn’t want her to go. And it wasn’t just becauseNeilwas going to get some of her time. Although I hated that.

Bet she never slapped him.

That gave me some small satisfaction. BecauseIcould elicit a reaction from her. She cared enough about what I said to smack me in the face when I deserved it.

“I’ll see you later,” she said.

But she didn’t hang up. Did she feel this pull too?

“You’ll get the property.”

“I will.”

I liked her bolstered confidence... and that maybe I had something to do with it.

I hung up the phone, waited about a minute, and dialed her again.

“Are you going to do this all day?”

Now there was no bite to her tone at all. There was a playfulness.

“Just making sure you can follow instructions.”

I hung up again and sat on the steps, smiling like an idiot.
