“I liked living in the last one,” I muttered quietly.

“Me too. Especially those avocado green appliances. Think they’ll make a comeback?”

A vision of the old washer and dryer at the house in the Hamptons flashed in my head. Along with Kane and his cocky smirk calling me sweetheart in the most disingenuous way.

That feeling as if I’d been struck by lightning was no different now than it was then. Though now, I wasn’t sure I hated him so much.

“Are you still there? Don’t tell me avocado green appliances are an insult to Earth,” he groaned.

“I’m surprised you’d want to see their resurgence.”

“I’m fond of them.”

I could picture the nonchalant rise and fall of his shoulder. He was good at feigning indifference. The more time I spent around him, the more I wondered if that was just a front.

“I’m on Lafayette near Bleecker.”

Was I really entertaining having another meal with him? Only so he couldn’t blow me off later. That was it.

“Stay put. I’ll be there in fifteen.”

Then he was gone. And I realized for five whole minutes, Kane had made me forget about my failure.

CHAPTERNINETEEN

KANE

“Where are you taking me?We’ve passed no fewer than a hundred restaurants.”

“And the food we’re about to eat is better than all of them combined.” I patted JoJo’s thigh as we went over the Washington Bridge.

She looked at me warily.

“Have I ever led you astray?” I asked.

“I’m not sure.” She chewed on her bottom lip and looked out the window.

“Do you eat bread?”

She cut her gaze over to me and nodded.

“And it’s a no on the meat and a maybe on the vegetables, so...”

“So what?”

I hadn’t realized I hadn’t finished my thought.

“So what’s the plan about getting your park?” Changing the subject seemed the best option.

“I’m not sure.” She looked down at her lap, her disappointment evident in every feature of her face.

I admired that she thought she could walk into a corporate office and convince them to do as she wanted.

I ran my fingers down her cheek. “I’ll see what I can dig up about the company. Sometimes you just need that little hidden something to get people to see things your way.”

She balked at me. “I don’t do things dirty.”

“How is information dirty? I didn’t say I’d make something up.”
