He hopped onto the dryer and patted the washing machine.

“What is your deal with laundry rooms?” I asked as I hefted myself onto the machine. The lid concaved with my weight. I let out a startled shriek.

Kane laughed as I scrambled to adjust. The lid popped back into place.

“It’s not funny,” I said, even as I giggled.

“Yeah. It’s funny.” He chuckled, then quieted looking down at the floor. “Are you sure you want the answer to that? Because I’m only giving truth this weekend.”

“Don’t you always?”

He tilted his head. “Yeah, but I’m not holding back.”

Boys tease the girls they like.

He was already being brutally honest. That felt like an opportunity. I could get answers to all my questions.

“I suppose that means I’m to do the same.”

“I hope you won’t hold back.”

Which was terrifying. Yet I already felt a little freer.

I could be honest. Not about everything, but mostly I could.

I held out my hand. He eyed it as if he weren’t quite sure what to do before we shook.

“No going back now,” he said.

“No going back,” I repeated.

But what had I really just agreed to?

CHAPTERTWENTY-THREE

KANE

“Let’s have dinner, then we’ll talk about the case.”

She blinked at me.

“What did you think? I’d start the Hamptons inquisition?” I asked.

“Kind of.”

She was being honest. That was a good sign. I still hadn’t decided what exactly it was I wanted out of these next few days. But being stuck together was a good start.

When had that changed? Wasn’t there a time when the thought of being forced to be around her was a punishment?

She hopped off the washer. “I had the kitchen stocked.” She breezed past. “Hope you like vegetables.”

“I know where the rods and reels are in this house. I’ll go catch a fish and make you watch,” I said as I caught up to her.

She wheeled around. “You wouldn’t.”

I smirked. “Wouldn’t I?” I gripped her shoulders and steered her toward the garage.

She tore out of my grasp and yanked on my arm back toward the kitchen. “No fishing.”
