“It’s exhausting.” She sank into my touch.

“Then let’s cook instead.”

She touched my arm. “Don’t make me regret this weekend.”

“Are you already?” Something about the possibility didn’t settle well.

“Not yet.”

“You’re having fun.”

“Let’s not get carried away.”

I grinned. “It’s better than whatever you didn’t have planned this weekend.”

Her lips twitched. “Maybe.”

CHAPTERTWENTY-FOUR

JOJO

“We could’ve eatenat the table.”

I swung my legs, my heels making aba-dum ba-dumagainst the washing machine.

“That’s boring.”

I tilted my head. Who was this man?

He set his empty plate to the side. I secretly smiled to myself. He’d complained the entire time he’d helped me cook that there was no meat. I guess roasted vegetables and salad wasn’t so bad after all.

“Are you going to sleep in here?”

He didn’t seem interested in any other room in this house—or any other house—besides the laundry room.

“I might.” He adjusted his rolled-up shirtsleeves. “I’ve asked you questions you haven’t answered.”

“And I’ve asked you some you haven’t answered.”

A knot formed in my stomach. We weren’t going to keep this casual.

“If you’d have let me finish, I was going to say that.” He leaned back. “Since you’re so eager to talk, you can go first.”

I pressed my palms into the edge of the washing machine. “Oh no no no. Your game, you go first.”

“It’s our game.”

Our.

I wasn’t sure I wanted to be anourin any capacity.

“Maybe we should just talk about the case.” I hated the slight tremble in my voice.

“Is that what you want?”

No. Yes. I didn’t know.

That topic was safer than personal ones. What if I discovered another side of Kane? One I liked.
