I glanced around the bathroom. “This wasn’t your grandparents’ room, was it?”

“No. It was mine. Why? You don’t want to sleep in the same bed as they shared?” She waggled her brows.

“Not particularly.”

“I can’t change anything. It’s silly, but I’m trying to hold on to what I can.”

“It’s not silly.” I slid my hand behind her neck. “Is this where you want to live?”

“I’d probably prefer the Hamptons, but if I were to stay in the city, yes. This is it for me.” She leaned into my touch. “I didn’t think to ask what you wanted.”

“If I’m out of that hellhole, I’m fine.” I looked up. “As long as you don’t have someone paint an awful scene on the ceiling.”

She wrinkled her nose. “Eww. Please tell me you don’t have cherubs on your ceiling.”

“The sky. Thank God it never got that far.” I grimaced.

“Nothing but solid colors on the ceilings. Agreed,” she said solemnly.

“Look at us doing domestic life.”

In spending the second night with JoJo, I was already more settled than I’d ever been in my own apartment.

“We’ll find our way.”

“We should leave Friday morning for the Hamptons so we’ll at least have some time alone before the Whitleys show up. While you were giving me the silent treatment, Penelope said she’ll come up Friday afternoon.”

She brightened. “I like this arrangement. It’s a little cumbersome, but maybe eventually we can spend more time there?”

“I’m the boss. I can do what I want.”

She patted my chest. “Don’t say that to Penelope unless you want an argument.”

“Thanks for the advice.”

“Are we good for now?”

I kissed her forehead. “We’re good for now.”

She fisted my shirt. “We didn’t get to ask Nancy what to do about Penelope.”

“Stop worrying. We’ll tell her this weekend.”

Her brow creased. “I’m still not ready.”

“Me neither, but it’s time she knew the truth.”

KANE

“Do you have the key?”

She held up Grandma Josephine’s giant key ring. “Yes.”

“I didn’t want to have to bust down the door,” I said as I helped her out of the car. “And you were in such a hurry to leave. It’s highly likely you forgot something.”

She glowered.
