“We’re our people,” she said breathlessly.

I was her person and she was mine.

Need washed over me like it never had. I hadn’t known it was possible to feel so much. While I was tempted to spare some regret for all the time we’d lost, I looked forward, into my future’s eyes.

And it was so bright I thought I’d go blind.

“Kane?” She blinked at me with dazed eyes as her fingers ran hypnotic circles on the back of my neck.

“I love you.”

Her eyes shimmered. She held me close, pressing our bodies together.

She was perfect.

Wewere imperfectly perfect.

“I have another secret,” she said. “A good one,” she amended when I tensed. “I thought I hated you, but I think I fell in love with you right here when you threw your pants in the dryer.”

I grinned. “I knew you felt it too.”

I dropped my forehead to hers and held her against me, in no hurry to move.

Then a laugh bubbled out of her lips.

I pulled back. “What’s so funny?”

“I don’t know. I’m just happier than I thought possible.”

“Me too, Barn. Me too.” I kissed her again. I couldn’t stop touching her. Couldn’t stop craving her.

My phone rang from somewhere on the floor.

“I see now why you didn’t want one of those,” I grumbled.

JoJo’s started as soon as mine stopped.

“That’s weird.”

We looked at each other and spoke at the same time. “Penelope.”

I fumbled for the first phone I could find.

Mine rang again.

“Zegas,” I answered without looking at the caller ID.

“There’s been an accident.” Whitley’s voice came through the speaker.

“Are you okay?” I asked, instantly relieved it wasn’t Penelope.

“We’re fine. We passed by on the way up. It was your SUV so we stopped.”

My blood went cold and JoJo gripped my arm.

“Penelope?” I choked out.

“Some people who saw what happened said a cinder block went through the windshield. She flipped a few times. I’m sorry, man, but the police and fire rescue are on their way. We can’t get her out. I think they’ll have to life-flight her.”
