The rejection I’d feared didn’t come.

It had been the opposite.

He’d embraced her.

Th-that wasn’t what I’d been prepared for. What I’d been told he’d do if he ever found out about her.

“JoJo.”

My name ripped from my sister’s voice as a choked sob.

Everything in me seized.

What had happened?

I was so far away. In Darwin, about to set sail for the whale expedition.

“Alma. What is it?”

“You have to fix—have to help me,” she pleaded.

“Tell me how.”

“He-he-he hit me.” Once she started, the rest came out in a rush.

Her words barreled at my chest.

No.

“Who hit you?” I gripped the phone so hard my joints ached.

She couldn’t mean him.

He was blunt and arrogant but . . .

I could feel his arms around me again as he carried me from the ocean just as acutely as if he were still doing it. I felt them too often.

Kane was my sister’s husband. He’d married her.

And quickly too.

I hadn’t picked him as a man who would jump into marriage that fast.

Clearly, I’d been the only one who’d felt that electricity.

I didn’t know him.

Since the wedding, Alma had done nothing but complain about what a monster he was.

“You know who,” she whispered as if she were afraid to speak his name.

It was a gut punch. Was Alma okay? Was Kane capable of that? The truth was, I didn’t know.

“You need to go to the police. Tell Daddy. And Grandma Josephine. They’ll protect you.”

“No,” she said sharply.

“Alma,” I cried. “You have to. He’s hurt you.”
