“Did you and Mom have an affair?”

I froze. Yep. Definitely my daughter.

“No.”

“No? That’s it? I can do math, so the timing—”

“I answered honestly. And I get another question.”

She made the same annoyed growl JoJo did, and I had to fight a grin.

“Are you why she’s never dated anyone?” She waved her finger in a no-no motion. “Forget that. I already know the answer.”

Her questions were like having ice-cold water dumped on my head. I wasn’t prepared for her bluntness. Or that she’d want to know about JoJo and me. I supposed I should’ve seen that coming.

“What’s the answer?”

She leveled me with a look. “If you don’t know, that’s something the two of you should discuss.”

I wasn’t sure I was ready for that, but I most certainly wanted Penelope’s take. No. That wasn’t fair. I was not going to use my daughter to satisfy my curiosities about JoJo.

She never dates?

“Fair enough.”

“A lawyer, huh?” Her brown-gold eyes sparkled.

How had I not noticed they were so much like JoJo’s? Only brown instead of green.

I laughed. “You and I come from a very long line of them.”

She leaned closer. Something weird filled me that we had that in common. That she seemed interested.

“We do?”

“I think you’re following more in the family’s footsteps though. Your grandparents and great-grandparents and great-great—you get the picture—were all prosecutors.”

“In New York?”

I nodded. “I’m pretty sure I heard my granddad say that our ancestors were lawyers in Europe too.”

“It’s in our blood.”

I blinked at her. “Yeah. In our blood.” It was weird half of this person standing beside me came from me. I couldn’t come to grips with that.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” She tilted her head.

“I’m probably going to do it a lot.” Better to just admit it. “I can’t believe . . .” I scrubbed my head. “I’ll never be able to explain what it’s like to have someone who’s part of you . . .” I was at a loss.

“Do you want grandkids?” She beamed mischievously.

I narrowed my gaze. “Do you have a boyfriend?”

“No, and I’m not sleeping with anyone either.”

That was a relief. “I’d prefer you didn’t,” I muttered.

“I want to have lots of kids, so they won’t get lonely.”
