A grin pulled at my lips. “If you’d just say thank you, I’d tell you why I’vebotheredyou.”

“I can’t believe I’m doing this,” he muttered. “Thank you, Kane.”

“That didn’t sound very sincere.”

“Three seconds, and I’m hanging up.”

“We’re going to keep all my vast fortune.” Something settled in me as I spoke the words out loud.

“Pompous much?”

“Very much.”

“And I know that’s what we’re going for—”

“It’s what we’re going to do,” I said confidently.

“What is going on with you? You sound . . . weird. And I don’t make weekend calls, so you’re on your own until Monday.”

A hint of disappointment coursed through me. Was that true? Was Whitley just like everyone else? Take, take, take.

In this case, I couldn’t care. He was the attorney I needed, and we had our golden ticket. This was for Penelope. Not my ego. Well, not anymore.

“Marlow, hand me my pants,” Whitley sighed. “Zegas is making me nervous. I don’t know if I need to talk him off a ledge or what.”

“Who are you married to? Him or me?” His wife’s muffled voice came through the line.

“Apparently, both of you.”

“Well, he can birth your next child,” she huffed. “Although I’d rather you do it so you know exactly what it’s like.” There was a rustling on the other end. “Don’t you dare kiss me to make me forget.”

A shade of green colored my vision. For as prickly as Marlow was, Patrick softened her spikes. They were building a life together. A family. Underneath their bickering, and all that tied into it, was so much love it made me ache. For what I never had.

For what I’d never have.

“Where are you? The office or your apartment?” Whitley barked into the phone.

“Neither.”

He groaned. “Why? Why am I still tangled up with you?”

“Because you’ve discovered you like me. And I’m in the Hamptons.”

“The Hamptons?”

“I could use some sea air.” Had Marlow said that? And what was that softness in her voice?

“Me too.” There was a gruff emotion in Whitley’s tone.

I felt like an intruder on a private moment. A jealous intruder.

“You don’t need to come to the Hamptons,” I finally said. “But we’re done screwing around. I want this before the judge Monday. Alma has had ample time to find legal counsel. It’s time to apply the pressure and get this over with.”

“Yeah. Sure.” Whitley sounded a bit dazed by my change in attitude. I’d been dragging my feet, unwilling to face my problems. “I’ll call her tomorrow. See if she can work us in on Monday.”

“Super.”

“Zegas, I’m glad you’re taking this more seriously, but what the hell is going on?”
