Penelope grinned slyly. “You know they workvery closelytogether.”

His jaw worked. Penelope’s grin widened.

What on earth was going on? Because he sounded jealous. And that was impossible.

I lifted my chin. “It’s my house. I can have any guest I choose.”

“I could make it my house.”

I narrowed my gaze. “You wouldn’t.”

He smirked. “Wouldn’t I? Seems like a nice start to reparations for what you did.”

I flicked my eyes toward Penelope. It didn’t matter that she was an adult. Some conversations were better shielded from her.

He lifted a brow. Panic swirled within. He could divulge that I wasn’t her biological mother and start a whole new storm of trouble.

“Just go upstairs and work this out.” Penelope pointed in the direction of the bedrooms.

“What do you know about working things out that way?” I snapped.

“Mom, the sexual tension is coming off the two of you like electricity. And forgive Kane. He’s jealous of Neil. That’s sweet.” She placed her hands on my shoulders and gave me a gentle shove out of the room.

“I am not jealous.” Kane slammed down his mug.

Penelope gave him awhatever you saylook. “Yes, you are.”

He pressed his lips together like a pissed-off toddler.

“Can we just have breakfast?” I asked in exasperation.

“We should address this elephant in the room.”

My stomach pitched at the mischievous glint in my daughter’s eyes.

“Is there any bacon in this house?” Kane flung open the refrigerator.

“No.”

Penelope and I spoke in unison.

“Then let’s go somewhere that has some.”

Penelope steered him toward a dining chair. “Sit. I’ll make pancakes.”

“Real ones? Or the weird shit?”

I bit my lip to keep from laughing. He was pouting, and it was precious to watch our daughter handle him with ease.

“Drink your tea and flirt with Mom.” She put his mug in front of him and motioned for me to sit too.

“I’m not the flirting kind,” he muttered.

“Yes, you are. I watched you charm an entire party of men and women,” I said, taking a sip of tea.

“You weren’t charmed.”

“Because you berated my idea.”
