How had I thought this man was a monster? If I’d just taken the time to look beneath the surface, I’d have seen things differently.

“You’ll help Earth Warriors too,” Penelope said. “I drafted a contract for the homeless property, but we didn’t get it. When you’re involved, they can’t say no.”

“I have a reputation.”

“You like representing the clients you do,” I said. Obviously he did or he wouldn’t continue to do that. For the first time I wondered if there was more to it.

“He likes the challenge,” Penelope said. “And some of them are truly innocent. He likes exonerating them too.”

His head lolled toward our daughter with a bit of wonder in his expression. Like he was amazed she already understood him so well.

“What kind of trouble are you in now, Barn?”

He’d skipped over her assessment, but that was okay. That was twice in one conversation he’d called me Barn. Somehow that gave me hope we’d get past our mountain of a problem.

“Assault.”

He and Penelope both jolted.

“You sure as hell know how to shock me.” He shook his head as if to clear it. “Why would anyone think you assaulted them?”

As if I were innocent.

I swelled that he believed in me despite everything I’d done.

“I shoved Alma out the door. She fell because of those ridiculous heels.” I lifted my eyes to the ceiling. “She says she’s going to the police.”

“Then we should get out of here before they come.” Kane got to his feet and held out his hands to me.

I placed them in his, and he pulled me up before helping Penelope.

“Are you serious?”

“Yeah. Let’s not even dignify their visit.”

“Put my car in the garage. I’m riding back with you,” Penelope called as she scrambled up the stairs.

“You’re crazy,” I said as Kane followed.

“If we go back to the city, my chances of having something normal for dinner, like pizza with only meat, go up exponentially.”

I groaned but was on his heels.

At the top of the stairs, he stopped and wheeled around, catching me by the waist. “I’m furious with my ex-wife. No, I hate her. But I don’t want to do this weekend over either.”

And another sliver of hope wrapped around my heart.

Maybe he could forgive me some day.

KANE

“Our grand planblew all to hell.”

I waltzed into my office where Whitley sat on the sofa, already completely at home.

“What did you do?” He glanced up from his papers with trepidation.
