Some of the tension in my chest released. “What time do you get off work?”

She laughed. “Are there set hours in the legal world?”

I grinned back. “Most definitely not.”

“I plan to be done by six.”

“Let me know. I want to bring in Whitley on your issue. We need to get ahead of it.”

Her face fell. “I didn’t hurt anyone.”

I touched her shoulder. “I know. We still have to put some work in to prove it.”

For a moment she looked every bit of her young age, vulnerable and a little lost. “Okay.”

I pulled her into a hug. I’d spent many years observing parent-child relationships—mostly for those I’d represented. I’d seen the two ends of the spectrum. The parents who loved their children unapologetically and unconditionally. And the parents who didn’t give a damn. My father fell somewhere in between. I would do better though. I felt protective of Penelope, even though I’d only known of her existence for such a short time.

She hugged me back hard, and I hoped I brought her some comfort. As her father, I wanted to shield her from everything and slay all her dragons.

“I have some people I’d like you to meet soon.”

She tilted her head to the side. “Who?”

“Your grandparents.”

CHAPTERTWENTY-ONE

JOJO

“How’d it go?”

I wrung my hands in my dress as I waited outside the courthouse. What was I doing here? I had plenty of things to do with Earth Warriors. Instead, I felt the need to support Kane.

He strode toward me with Whitley close behind. Both of them wore confident smirks . . . though that didn’t tell me much. Kane was always cocky.

“Judge Robard is not a fan of secret babies,” Whitley said.

Kane scowled. “It’s my news to share.”

Whitley spread his arm. “Be my guest.” He pointed at me. “Your sister has two weeks to get her case together. The hearing is going forward then whether she’s ready or not.”

“So much for me sharing,” Kane muttered.

“I did it with more flair than you would anyway.” Whitley flicked his chin at me. “I’m going to spend some time with my wife and kids. Let me gauge her mood, but maybe all of you can come over for dinner to discuss Penelope’s situation.”

Kane growled. “You could’ve at least let me tell JoJo you’ve agreed to help.”

“You’re too slow, old man.” He winked then cocked his head. “What do you see in this guy?”

“Get out of here,” Kane said.

Whitley grinned. “Later on.” He waved over his shoulder.

“The two of you speak your own language.” I shook my head, a little lost before I hooked my arm through Kane’s. “Now give me your version of what happened.”

“He already told you all the good parts.”

“Are you pouting?” I asked, barely able to contain my smile.
