I wasn’t going to make the same mistake as my sister and walk away from a good man.

Finally the elevator dinged.

I fumbled with my keys, but got the front door opened.

He dropped the shopping bag and kicked the door shut.

My keys hit the floor with a clatter as I moved through the apartment on a mission with Kane in tow.

“I knew you wanted me badly, Barn,” he whispered.

Oh that name. Why did it set me on fire in a good way now?

Because it’s special to him.

Was I?

Could I be?

I should know that for sure before jumping into bed with him. But I was certain in how I felt . . . mostly. And that was enough.

I wanted Kane to have the gift I’d been holding on to for so long.

I detoured into the laundry room and something dark and forbidden sparked in his eyes.

“You look surprised,” I said saucily. “Where else would we do this besides our spot?”

His forehead dropped to mine. “We have to go to the Hamptons.”

“Wh-what?”

“It has to be there.”

“Kane?”

“I want the first time to be there. On that damn avocado-green dryer.”

Any doubt I had about Kane vanished.

I brushed my lips across his. “You’re sentimental.”

“I’m only recently discovering that.”

I kissed him, slow and leisurely with none of the fever I’d felt moments ago.

“Don’t keep doing that or I’m going to forget being sentimental,” he protested.

“I’m just trying to make sure you don’t stay too mad at me,” I murmured against his lips.

“Josephine.”

I straightened as horror filled me.

Heels clicked on the wood floors.

“What the hell is she doing here?” Kane asked.

My mother appeared in the doorway. “So it is true. Your bastard child belongs to your sister’s husband.”
