CHAPTERTWENTY-FOUR

KANE

Ice slid through my veins.

The woman was in second place for the worst person on Earth contest, right after her daughter. Well, the one I’d been married to.

“Do not speak about my daughter—your granddaughter—that way.” JoJo spoke before I could get the words out.

“I am not like your father’s mother. I won’t tolerate you galivanting and doing as you please. You continue to sully this family’s name.”

JoJo folded her arms over her chest. “If I’m so disgraceful, why are you here? How did you know where I was? How did you get in anyway?”

“It’s no secret you’re living here while you’re in town. The door was unlocked. And I’ve come to talk some sense into you.” Julia Cunningham was the picture of perfection. Not a wrinkle in her clothes or her face, for that matter. Pearls around her neck. Hair smoothed so that none were out of place.

Even monsters could look perfect at times.

“I see what your sister told me is true. How could you? Not only is it wrong to go after Alma’s husband, it’s disgusting. What will people say?” Her mother continued as if neither of us were important enough to speak.

“Let me get this straight. You didn’t care that Alma ran around on me like it was her profession?” I asked snidely.

She made a noise of annoyance. “Indiscretions happen. Most people in our echelon are hardly in any position to judge.”

“Did you cheat on Daddy?” JoJo asked, her tone lethal.

Julia smoothed her suit jacket. “Don’t be ridiculous.” She flicked her gaze over JoJo as if she were nothing. “Fix your dress. You look like you’ve been caught doing something scandalous.”

“I’m in my own home.” JoJo glared.

“With the man married to your sister.”

“Not much longer,Mom.” I flashed an insincere smile.

“I’ve tolerated you because—”

“I’m loaded,” I finished. No need to beat around the bush.

“You are absolutely—”

“Right.” This time JoJo completed the thought.

Teamwork.

I furrowed my brow. So I thought of JoJo as a partner now? Huh. That didn’t feel wrong at all. Actually, it felt right.

Just like that a little more of my anger toward JoJo disappeared.

Why couldn’t my monster-in-law have died instead of JoJo’s father?

“Not sure if you noticed, but you don’t hold any of the power in this family,” I said.

“Iamthe power in this family.” Her expression was absolute fury.

“You haven’t even asked about Penelope. What is wrong with you that you don’t want to know your granddaughter?” JoJo steered the conversation back to more important topics.

I hadn’t been given a choice about knowing Penelope.

Julia Cunningham had.
