“I didn’t know about you.”
Penelope looked back and forth between JoJo and me. “If you didn’t know . . . I don’t understand.”
“That makes two of us.” I flicked my chin to the sofa.
Penelope sat and turned to prop against the arm so we were facing each other. She took a swig from the bottle of whiskey and coughed.
Was I already passing on bad habits?
Once again we stared at each other, at a loss.
I wanted answers. And I wanted them now.
But I wasn’t sure I was prepared to face them.
No matter what they were, it didn’t change the fact that I’d been robbed.
So what if I hadn’t wanted children? I’d never been faced with the actual position of having a child until today.
When I looked at her, I saw years that we’d missed . . . because I hadn’t had a choice.
That scene I’d imagined of a little girl standing on a chair cooking . . . she wasmylittle girl. And I hadn’t known.
I’m a father.
I was the one who was supposed to have the wise words, who was supposed to know what to do.
I didn’t.
All I could do was look at the young woman I’d had nothing to do with rearing. My only contribution was my sperm.
I could’ve given more.
Even if it was better if I hadn’t, I’d at least wanted the choice.
Slowly, I cut my eyes to JoJo, who stood shrunken in on herself. She should be ashamed. And the pain that was so obvious was nothing compared to mine.
What if I’d stolen her child’s entire life from her?
When my gazed drifted back to Penelope, she was still looking at me for answers.
Ones I didn’t have.
“It’s safe to say this is a shock to both of us.” I set my glass on the end table. “Since we don’t know any answers to our questions, maybe we should start with what we do know.” I stood and extended a hand. “This is long overdue, but I’m Kane Zegas. Apparently not your uncle.”
