There were times in the past few days I was certain he’d forgive me. As I studied him, my confidence wavered.

I’d lived this long without him. But I’d been in denial. I’d been flat-out wrong.

I wasn’t sure I could achieve that full picture I’d always wanted without him.

Which was odd within itself.

I’d never needed anyone except Penelope. And of course my father and grandparents.

That was different than this ache I had when it came to Kane.

“Are you trying to laser a hole in him or make his clothes disappear?”

I squeaked when Patrick spoke in my ear.

Penelope and Kane looked at us.

“I’m not sure. Seems like it’s both most of the time.”

He laughed. “That sounds about right.”

“Stop trying to contaminate her against me. I don’t need any help in that department.”

Hope bloomed at Kane’s words. Maybe he wasn’t so keen to be rid of me after all.

“I’ve seen the error of my ways.” My cheeks heated. I hadn’t meant to be so candid, especially in front of other people.

“It’s the worst when you have to admit that to them,” Marlow said, setting the pizzas on the table.

Kane rummaged through the cabinets and grabbed a stack of plates, just like he had at Nancy Calhoun’s place. I hoped to see her again soon so I could thank her. Her advice had changed the course of my life. And I wanted Penelope to meet her.

“I’m not afraid to say I’m wrong,” I said as I moved beside Kane to look for glasses. “But it isn’t so fun if that means he’s right.” I bumped his shoulder.

“I get that a lot.” He smirked.

“Aren’t they adorable together?” Penelope beamed at us.

Patrick slung an arm around Marlow. “I never thought Kane Zegas and adorable would be used in the same universe, but yeah, they kind of are.”

“You are such a softie,” Marlow said, but there was affection in her voice. “Can we eat before this gets cold?” She snatched a box off the top. “I don’t need a plate.”

There were five pizzas stacked on the table.

“Maybe none of us do?” I asked carefully.

She shrugged. “I ordered everyone their own. Except the kids. Patrick will have to share with them.”

He snagged a piece out of her box and took a giant bite.

Her eyes rounded. “Hey! You’re going to pay for that.”

“I already know what I want for my punishment.” He waggled his eyebrows.

“You have a one-track mind,” she muttered.

“When it comes to you, Wicked, yeah, I do.”

That old jealousy reared its ugly head. I hadn’t felt that way in longer than I could recall. I genuinely wanted others to be happy.Iwas happy.
