I still just desired . . . that.

And then I looked at Penelope and Kane sitting next to each other. They were helping Blake with his pizza and laughed when he picked a bell pepper off.

“Eww!”

“I don’t like them either,” Kane said, sympathizing with the boy.

“You don’t?” I asked as I slipped into the vacant seat beside him.

“Not really.”

“You ate them in the Hamptons.”

“I was trying to impress you. No need to blow up diplomacy over peppers.” He ripped off a bite of pizza with his teeth.

“But complaining there’s no meat is where you draw the line?”

“A man has to have principles.” He stole an olive off my pizza and popped it into his mouth.

“Of course.”

“Patrick thinks he’s got your divorce nailed,” Marlow said between bites. “What’s the emergency tonight?”

“Me,” Penelope said dejectedly.

“These two will get you out of it.” She patted my daughter’s hand.

Patrick and Kane stared at the gesture like they were seeing things.

Marlow smacked her husband in the arm. “I can be maternal.”

“I know that,” he said.

“I can also be nice.”

“That’s a new one.” He kissed the side of her head.

“I was going to ask you what you’re going to do with your newfound freedom once Patrick nails Alma’s ass for what she did, but I already see.” Marlow grabbed another slice of pizza.

“What did she do?”

Marlow furrowed her brow, and my appetite vanished. How much did Patrick tell his wife about his work?

“I don’t want to get into it,” Kane said, narrowing his gaze on Marlow.

“I don’t blame you. What an awful woman to keep—”

“How are your brothers?” Kane asked as I gripped his thigh under the table.

“Don’t worry about interrupting me,” she said with a scowl. “They’re fine. And Dad is too before you cut me off again.”

“Glad to hear it.”

“You really don’t like talking about your wife, do you?” She wiped her mouth and took a swallow of water.

“Do you like talking about your previous husband?” Kane let out a sigh. “I’m sorry. That was a low blow and completely unfair.”

She glared at Kane. “It was. And you’re forgiven.”
