I tangled my fingers in his hair. Marveled at how I could feel so much. Was terrified that I’d wake up tomorrow and it would all be a dream.

“We’ll head out Friday night.”

That statement alone felt like a victory. I’d waited for him for so long. Another few days wouldn’t kill me.

I hoped.

CHAPTERTHIRTY

KANE

Conflicted.

It was a strange feeling.

I was on a seesaw between anger and desire.

At the moment, desire was winning.

Sunlight peeked through the curtains, and I pulled JoJo closer to me. She smelled earthy and like peace. And she was stunning when she slept.

“Stop pretending you’re asleep,” I rasped in her ear.

She burrowed closer. “I want a few more minutes of this.”

Had anyone ever said that to me? If they had, I couldn’t remember.

Somehow holding JoJo was more satisfying than all the lovers I’d had combined . . . which was yet another mystifying thing about the woman.

I want a hell of a lot more than a few minutes.

I jolted at the realization.

I couldn’t live with another woman I was angry with all the time. I’d had two decades of that and it was enough.

But could I live without this woman?

I didn’t know.

She turned to face me and snuck her arms around my waist. “You’re already somewhere else.”

“I’m concerned over what my breakfast options are.”

She kissed my nose. “Something truly terrible.”

“I figured as much.”

She stroked my back. “I know you can’t tell me much, but did you make any progress last night?”

I brushed the hair back from her worried face. “We did. I need to follow up with a few leads this morning. Once we have a little more information, Whitley and I will determine which direction to go.”

She nodded. “I’m glad she has you.”

“Do you think she liked the briefcase?” Uncertainty filled me, and that was odd too.

“She loved it.” JoJo offered me an encouraging smile. “You’re a great father.” And then her look turned wistful.

I smoothed her brow. “What’s that look about?”
