“Did you send me flowers?” I asked before I thought better of it.

“No,” he said carefully.

Disappointment panged in my stomach. Of course, he hadn’t. We were walking a finer line than we ever had been. Last night and this morning had been good, but it was silly and hopeful to think Kane was even close to ready to make such a romantic gesture.

I flipped over the card.

Neil.

I fell into the seat at the end of the table and sighed.

“It was him, wasn’t it?” Kane had a special tone of voice when he spoke of Neil, one that was hard and full of displeasure.

“Yes.” I closed my eyes. Had I done something to lead him on? To make him think this was appropriate? Although the message on the card was a simpleHave a Good Day, it felt like he meant more.

“Bastard.”

“Kane. That’s not nice.”

“Neither is sending my person flowers,” he argued.

My person.

“This morning you weren’t sure you would forgive me.” And now I was his person? I tried not to let giddiness overwhelm me.

“I saidmightnot. I didn’t say I wouldn’t. And people in relationships argue all the time. That doesn’t mean it’s okay for them to get flowers from someone who clearly wants more than a working relationship.” His tone became more irritated with every word.

I shut the glass door to the conference room.

“Ididn’t send the flowers,” I hissed.

“Did you want him to?”

I threw my hand in the air. “What? No. I was excited because I thought they were from you.”

“And now I can’t get you any because you’ll think I’m doing it just to top him.”

“That’s crazy,” I cried.

“It’s true.”

Something slammed in the background.

“You said I’m your person,” I tried to infuse calm in my voice, but everything inside me was so erratic, I wasn’t sure how it came out.

“I know what I said,” he snapped.

“Did you mean it?”

“How many times do I have to tell you? I don’t say things I don’t mean. Unless I lose my temper and say something cruel.”

I could imagine him running his hand through his hair in frustration.

“I didn’t call you to argue.”

“Why did you call?”

I spun. Kane stood in the doorway of the conference room.
