Alma stood just inside my office, surveying the scene. How the hell had she gotten in here? Where was Jeremy? Obviously not at his desk. He knew not to let my ex-witch in my office.

JoJo pressed her leg against mine.

“Remember what we’ve done on that couch?” Alma flashed her sister a ruthless grin.

She tensed beside me.

“Yeah. Nothing.” I flicked my chopsticks toward the door. “Go.”

“You haven’t told her who her real mother is.”

There was no mistaking theherin that statement was Penelope.

“Don’t act like you care now,” JoJo said. She’d abandoned her lunch on the table.

“She might be interested to know how you stole her from me.”

JoJo leapt from the sofa. “You didn’t want her!”

I stood and put my hands on her shoulders.

Alma cut her gaze to where I touched JoJo.

“I was young and emotional and confused. Both of you mentally abused me.”

The woman could’ve been an award-winning actress.

“You are my sister. And I love you. But do not destroy an innocent person’s life,” JoJo said, deathly quiet.

“You stole my child. You stole my inheritance.” She looked at us both triumphantly. “You stole my husband.”

“I didn’t.” JoJo was insistent.

“Oh really?” Alma’s eyes drifted to where my hands were on JoJo’s shoulders. “Are you or are you not all cozy in my husband’s office? Are you or are you not living in our grandparents’ apartment?”

“I had nothing to do with the inheritance. I didn’t know what was in the will until Grandma Josephine passed away. And Kane isn’t your husband anymore. You filed for divorce.”

“We were working things out until—”

“That’s enough.” The thundering sound of my voice echoed through my office.

“I’m owed damages for the emotional turmoil you’ve put me through.” Crocodile tears moistened her eyes.

“Why are you doing this?” JoJo whispered.

“You’ve always been so perfect. They gave everything to you even though I stayed here and behaved like the model daughter.”

“I didn’t ask for it.”

“You could’ve given me my share. Instead you kept it for yourself.” Alma focused on me. “If you want my sister, you’re going to have to pay. Both of you.”

“Enough.” I pointed toward the door.

Alma shrugged. “Have it your way. I tried to make this easy on you.”

I’d seen this act so many times. And most of them, I’d caved. But it had always been over more money or clothes or another vacation home.

Now she was threatening JoJo and my daughter.
