“Kane.”

“Don’t Kane me.” He brushed my lips with his thumb. “What’s the next move? Are you looking for something near the park to start your housing solution?”

“You can’t do unscrupulous things.” I lost some of my bravado. He hadn’t admitted to anything, but I knew he’d had a hand in this. I just didn’t know why.

“I’m a lawyer. It’s expected.”

“Stop deflecting, and tell me the truth.”

The cockiness slipped from his features. They became open and honest. “The truth is that you make me see things in a different way. You make me want to be a better person . . . mostly. And seeing you happy makes me happy.”

I tugged on his tie. “You’re impossible.” How could I stay mad at him when he said things like that? “You’re never going to admit it, are you?”

“Admit that I’m glad you’ve disrupted my life? Yeah, I’ll definitely own up to that.”

Whatever argument I opened my mouth to speak was covered and forgotten by his kiss.

“That’s totally inappropriate for the workplace,” Patrick said as he sauntered back over. “And good news. Marlow would love to go to the Hamptons this weekend.”

CHAPTERTHIRTY-FOUR

KANE

“Why are we in the Bronx?”

Penelope closed the car door and took in the neighborhood.

I took JoJo’s hand. “There’s somebody I want you to meet.”

She followed us up the sidewalk.

JoJo turned around. “He did this to me too. Don’t worry. You’ll like her.”

“So much for the element of surprise,” I muttered.

The curtains in the front window moved and seconds later the door flew open.

“You’re here.” Nancy Calhoun stood with her arms open, wearing her signature apron.

I kissed both of her cheeks. JoJo did the same. Then we parted to let Penelope on the stoop.

“Nancy, this is my daughter. Penelope.” Pride filled me.

Nancy pulled her in for a mama bear hug. “Aren’t you just the prettiest thing? I wish I had a son your age to introduce you to.”

Penelope’s eyes widened, but she hugged Nancy back as if they were long-lost friends. “I’m still working on my independent streak so it’s probably not a good time for that kind of introduction.”

Nancy laughed and tugged her inside. “I made the vegetable lasagna again.”

I hated to admit it, but the house smelled amazing.

“You’ll love it,” JoJo said. “Even Kane does.” She elbowed me in the side.

“Great. Three against one tonight.”

Nancy looked at me over her shoulder. “I’ve got something for you too.”

I pulled on JoJo’s hand and let Nancy and Penelope go into the kitchen. “Is this what your home was like? With you and Penelope?”
