“It feels good to have something to smile about.”

“I’m not going to jail.”

I offered him homemade bread. “I know.”

“Nelope! Nelope!” Blake thrust his finger at her. “Nelope!”

Kane tried to sit up. I raced around the bed. Penelope blinked a few times. Her eyes roved around the room in confusion.

They finally landed on me. She tried to speak, but couldn’t because of the ventilator.

I brushed the hair from her face. “Hi, sweetheart. I’m here. We’re here.”

She begged me for answers with her eyes.

“We’ll tell you everything soon.” I kissed her forehead. “Let me go get Dr. Ellis. I’ll be right back.”

“Nelope!”

Her features softened when she looked at Blake. Did she recognize him?

I ran from the room. The security shot from their seats, setting their soup on the floor.

“Ana! We need Dr. Ellis. Penelope opened her eyes.” My heart pounded.

We’d been waiting for this moment for weeks. She was awake. Finally, my sweet girl was awake.

I leaned against the desk for a second to catch my breath.

Nurse Ana made a call and Dr. Ellis burst from one of the closed doors. He sprinted toward Penelope’s room, Ana and me on his tail.

“She’s awake!” I called to the security men as we passed. My elation surpassed reason.

The crowded room parted for Dr. Ellis.

When we reached her bedside, Penelope’s eyes were closed again.

No.

I’d just gotten my baby back.

“Miss Cunningham.” Was Dr. Ellis’s voice scratchy?

Her lids fluttered.

His grip on the bedside tightened.

Finally, her eyes opened again. When she caught sight of him, they widened. He wasn’t such a bad thing to wake up to.

He cleared his throat. “I’m Dr. Ellis. Don’t try to speak. I know the intubation is uncomfortable, but I will do my best to get you off the ventilator as soon as I can.”

She blinked at him.

Can she hear?

“If I’m making sense, squeeze my finger once.” He offered her his index finger.

She stared.
