Whitley smacked his forehead. “It was better when she didn’t like you.”

“She always liked me, she just didn’t know it,” I shot back.

“Is that so?” Her mouth lifted in a tease.

“That’s so.”

“You are so full of yourself.” There was no sharpness in her tone, only amusement.

“Another reason you love me.”

The woman kept me off-balance, but made me a better man.

“Don’t forget you’ve saved my life . . . twice,” she added sarcastically.

“Why don’t you save mine?” My heart raced.

“Wh-what?”

“She already has,” Whitley chimed in.

He was right. JoJo had done more for me than I could ever do for her. That wouldn’t keep me from trying.

“Permanently.”

Her eyes rounded as a fine sheen covered them. “Are you—”

“Asking you to marry me? That’s exactly what I’m doing, Barn.”

“I thought if that happened you’d do it in the laundry room,” she whispered.

I reached out my hand, and she took it. “We already went through that. The wedding is there.”

She laughed. “How could I forget?”

“You’re killing me here.” My entire life hung in the balance. I’d never asked anyone to spend forever with me. I wanted her. I needed her to be my wife.

She came closer and bent to speak next to my ear.

“Yes.”

Then she kissed me to confirm her answer.

And I felt like I could fly. No impossible victory in the courtroom had ever felt even close to this.

“I could work on the romance bit, but I want what I want,” I said unapologetically.

She beamed at me. “I thought you’d never ask.”

JOJO

“Forensics is a funny thing.”

Patrick propped his feet up on the coffee table.

Kane groaned. “We’re not in the mood for a lecture.”
