KANE
A Week Later
“I never thoughtI’d get married in a hospital.”
I tugged JoJo closer to Penelope’s bedside. Our daughter was awake, though still not breathing on her own. But she would. Her lungs were still collapsed. Dr. Hotshot assured me she was getting better every day.
JoJo smoothed my lapels. “You didn’t think you’d get married again, period.”
“And you blew that all to pieces.” I kissed her temple. “Thank you.”
“Are we ready to get this party started?” Miss Adeline held up her Bible. The old woman ran a dog rescue. It was too complicated to explain how I knew her, but she was feisty, especially for being in her eighties.
The filled room quieted.
All the people we cared about were here. And it was standing room only.
“Ready?” I took both of JoJo’s hands in mine and let out a deep breath.
She smiled. “Ready.”
I leaned forward so my lips touched her ear. “You look beautiful.”
She wore a simple white dress, one that showed off her curves. And I knew exactly what was underneath it.
“And you’re very handsome.” She blushed.
“I know.”
She groaned.
“We’d better do this before we have a runaway bride,” Miss Adeline said.
Everyone laughed.
“The short version, right?” she confirmed.
We both nodded.
“Kane, do you take this woman to be your wife? To have and hold? And promise not to put your clothes in a dryer unless it’s energy efficient?”
A burst of laughter escaped JoJo.
I held her gaze. “I do.”
“JoJo, do you take this insane man to be your husband? To have and hold? And promise to let him eat normal food occasionally?”
Her eyes danced with happiness. “I do.”
“Good enough for me. By the power vested in me by the State of New York andgetordained.com, I now pronounce you husband and wife. Kiss her already.”
Good enough for me too.
I smashed my lips to hers and kissed her like she was the last drop of water on Earth. She needed to know how much I loved her. And I wasn’t the best at saying it, but I vowed to spend the rest of my life showing her.
