“They have plenty of witnesses who saw it go through the windshield and the car lose control. I’ll have him ask if someone spotted a red Maserati in the vicinity.” Patrick gently pushed the stroller holding their other sleeping child with his foot.
“No,” Kane said quickly.
We all looked at him like he was crazy.
“I don’t want anyone to suspect her. I’m handling it.”
My stomach cramped again. I didn’t want to think about the ways the people he knew could extract information. Or make someone disappear. But if Alma had anything to do with this . . .
I should open my mouth and tell Kane to let the authorities do their job. But I wanted answers. Kane could get them.
No, I wanted my daughter back healthy and vibrant.
“I need to see her,” I said quietly.
Kane’s features darkened. “That’s not a good idea.”
Had they already found Alma?
“Penelope,” I clarified.
I just wanted to hold my sweet girl. To let her know she wasn’t alone. That we were here, doing everything we could to get her well.
I stood, but my legs were like jelly. I stumbled and collapsed back into the chair.
Marlow nudged the sandwich and tea in my direction. “Eat. Just a little. That will help.”
Patrick looked at his wife with so much love it was painful. They had their family. It was growing and beautiful.
I was on the brink of losing everything that mattered.
I didn’t want food. I wanted to break things. To scream until I had no voice.
I wanted my baby.
“I just want my baby,” I said to myself.
“She’s with us,” Kane said against my hair.
I deflated. I was so tired. So numb. Yet in so much pain.
It should’ve been me. Not Penelope.
She was innocent.
I didn’t want her to pay for my sins.
The sight of the sandwich turned my stomach sour, but I reached for it anyway. I needed strength to get to my daughter. Strength to see her through her recovery.
Because she was going to recover.
She had to.
“I’m family.”
We all looked toward the ferocious voice that came from the doorway.
Kane’s face flashed in surprise. “Nancy?”
