She waved off the nurse who apparently had been chasing her. “I’m here, honey.” She pulled me in for a hug. I didn’t realize how much I needed that until now.

“We are too.”

It was my turn to be surprised at the man and woman behind Nancy Calhoun. He was tall and broad and wore a suit like it was made for him. Beside him was a stunning woman in a sweatshirt that hung off one shoulder, jeans with holes in them, and ballet flats.

“Elliott?” Kane slowly stood. “What are you doing here?”

“Don’t worry. You can bill me for this,” the man returned stoically. He shook Kane’s hand vigorously. And even though he had an ice-cold presence, there was a hint of compassion when he looked at Kane.

The woman muscled between them and hugged Kane. “Whatever you need, we’re here.”

Tentatively, he hugged her back. “Thank you, Vivian.” He hugged her harder. “Thank you for your help with the specialists. But I didn’t expect you to come in person.”

“We weren’t going to let you be alone.” She glanced around. “Looks like you aren’t.”

He followed her gaze. “Looks like I’m not.”

CHAPTERFIVE

KANE

“We’ve got her.”

Daniel steered me into a secluded hallway of the hospital away from the crowded room we’d taken over. Nancy, the Whitleys, and the Elliotts had hung around for support all day . . . and I was still surprised.

My anger cheered, but my mind was on Penelope just a few doors down.

“And?”

“Donato knows what he’s doing.”

I gave him an unimpressed glance. “If I didn’t know that, I wouldn’t have asked him to speak to her.”

“He’s letting her marinate just a bit. As soon as he has the information you want, he’ll make contact.”

Elliott, who was all business all the time, was here. To support me.

I still couldn’t get over my shock. But if I hadn’t really thought he’d help me, would I have called him in the first place? I didn’t think so.

“She’s behind it.” There was no doubt in every instinct I had, though this was extreme for my almost ex-wife.

“When he’s finished, what would you like done with the package?”

JoJo thought I was always cool, but I had nothing on this guy. I’d seen him in some pretty bad situations, and he never blanched . . . except when it came to his wife.

WhatdidI want done with Alma?

I wanted to throw a cinder block at her head, but I couldn’t say that or Donato Salvatore would make it happen.

I shoved my hands in my pockets. “What would you do?”

He lifted a brow.

Stupid question, Kane.

Elliott didn’t have kids, but if someone went after Vivian, he’d burn down the world to make them pay.

I wasn’t a violent man by nature.
