There’s been an accident.

The moment Patrick called flooded my brain.

Your SUV has been totaled.

Followed by the authorities’ phone call to Kane when they found the registration in the glove box.

Your daughter has been life-flighted.

Finally, the call the police made to me to notify next of kin.

It was a torrent of horrific memories.

If Alma was behind this, I never wanted to see her again.

When Penelope came back to me, I never wanted to let her out of my sight again.

But she’d have her own life.

And I wanted that for her too.

Dr. Anderson strode through the door along with another much younger doctor.

“JoJo, this is Dr. Ethan Ellis. He’s a permanent physician here at the facility, but we’ve worked together on many occasions.” That seemed to be Dr. Anderson’s way of telling me the other man was capable despite his youth.

“A pleasure to meet you, Dr. Ellis.”

“Likewise.” He also had that no-nonsense personality.

As long as he helped Penelope, that was fine by me.

“We’ve been communicating for several days about Penelope’s condition and are in agreement about the next steps forward,” Dr. Anderson said.

“She’s strong, but her injuries are catastrophic. Ideally, we’d want to work toward getting her off the ventilator as soon as possible, and we will, but Dr. Anderson is correct that we need to assist her body in whatever way we can.” The man spoke confidently.

Was he older than I’d assumed?

“We still have a long way to go, but Penelope is in good hands.” Dr. Anderson’s assurance helped only marginally. Time would tell if he was right.

“Any prognosis on when she’ll wake up?”

I jolted at Kane’s voice, who joined me beside Penelope.

“We’re not sure she will.”

Kane glared at Dr. Ellis. “Who are you?”

I placed a hand on Kane’s arm.

“Dr. Ethan Ellis. The lead physician at Savannah House.”

Oh no.

We didn’t need some macho pissing contest.

Kane’s arm tensed under my touch. “Our daughter needs positivity and hope. If you can’t do that, maybe you aren’t the person to supervise her care.”

“I won’t make empty promises. And after thoroughly reviewing her charts, I’m not sure what her body will do. It’s up to your daughter.” Dr. Ellis kept his tone calm and even.
