Instead of being a decent person and only staying for a minute, he made himself at home in the chair. JoJo dragged another one beside him.

Me against them.

That felt so wrong.

And yet, my actions were encouraging this. JoJo needed comfort . . . and Neil came. Ugh. JoJo said she wouldn’t give up on me until she made me hers. But it looked like I was too late anyway.

Watching them act with familiarity was almost intolerable. If he didn’t leave soon, my teeth would be dust from grinding them so hard.

Didn’t he know we’d been through enough the last few days. The last thing we needed was to entertain guests.

The words to excuse myself stuck on my tongue. I couldn’t leave her alone with him. And I refused to be rooted out of my own domain.

JoJo, Penelope, and I were a family.

Neilneeded to get out of the way.

At least he didn’t put on the pretense of pleasantries with me. He hadn’t spoken to me, and I had absolutely nothing to say to him.

Except get out.

But JoJo seemed happy he was here.

That probably bothered me more than anything. She cared for him. And I wanted to push her away . . .

Screw that.

I was a selfish bastard. I didn’t want her to care for any man but me.

JoJo was mine.

CHAPTERFOURTEEN

JOJO

“Could you have been any ruder?”

Kane shrugged and had the nerve to look at me like I was the one in the wrong.

“Isn’t it rude to stay until after ten?”

He was far too casual. Far too distant.

“He’s a friend. And he adores Penelope. He’s been like a father to her.” I snapped my mouth shut the second the words were out of my mouth. While it was true, that wasn’t the best thing to say to Kane.

“How nice it must have been for him to have had the opportunity,” he said icily.

“I didn’t mean—”

“I understood clearly.”

Anger vibrated off him. He’d been behaving oddly since before Neil arrived. The visit from my friend hadn’t helped.

“He’s—”

“And you continue to take up for him. The man who sent you flowers knowing you were pursuing a relationship with someone else. I’m beginning to think I’ve misread our situation.” Storm clouds gathered on his face.

My stomach bottomed out.
