I preferred to keep my associations as distant as possible . . . at least on the surface.

But I wasn’t leaving, not even for an hour.

So I sent him the address and told him now was fine.

JoJo appeared in the doorway. “I adore Nancy, but for the life of me I can’t figure out why she thinks you and I can eat twenty enchiladas.”

I laughed. “I notice you didn’t mention an entire chocolate cake.”

“That one I understand.” She dropped down into the chair beside me. “The staff were thrilled to have a homemade lunch.”

JoJo had a nurturing spirit. Of course she would try to take care of those who were tending to Penelope. She had the instinct to do so naturally.

I wasn’t sure she even realized she did it.

“Nancy will be thrilled so many people were pleased.”

“Want a piece of cake?” She lolled her head to the side.

“Nah. My investigator is on his way. I hope he’s made progress on who really killed Rhodes.”

She perked up. “Did he say he has some news?”

I shook my head. “But he doesn’t like to meet for no reason.”

“Can they move forward with a lawsuit against someone in Penelope’s condition?” She knotted her hands together.

“It’s in poor taste, but yeah, they can.” I covered her hands with mine. “A judge won’t touch the case. I’ll make sure of it.”

She relaxed a fraction as her gaze drifted toward Penelope. “I miss her.”

“Me too.”

Did I have the right to? We barely knew each other, yet it felt as if we were being robbed of more valuable time. I wasn’t getting any younger. And I hated my daughter had to spend any part of her life in the dark. Unconscious.

“Once she’s released, where should we continue her recovery? In the city? Or the Hamptons?”

Something strange filled my chest. These were the kind of decisions normal functioning couples made . . . together. I’d never had that.

“Thank you. For asking my opinion.”

She blinked at me. “Why wouldn’t I?”

“You could easily cut me out of the process.” It was frightening how vulnerable I was when it came to JoJo.

“I wouldn’t,” she said insistently. “I’m not thinking straight, but I hope you are.”

“The house might be better, but here she’s closer to the doctors.” I looked at Penelope’s sleeping form. “How about when she wakes, we ask her?”

“See. You’re more reasonable than I am.” She bumped her shoulder with mine. “For the moment.”

“Big words, Barn. Those are big words.”

“Oh hush.” The scold was said with a smile.

I leaned over so my lips were near her ear. “Better be careful or I might start to think you like me.”

“Think again.”
